Edible Bowl
2013
The Royal college of Art
Short term project/Solo project
Plastic is a substance the earth cannot digest. This edible bowl is made of several natural ingredients to address this issue. The bowl is shaped and solidified through strong pressing process, so that it would not be broken nor melt easily. Even though the edible bowl is not a perfect alternative, it provides intellectual curiosity to those seeking environmentally friendly materials.
CGM Glucose Monitor
2023
IDEO x Abbott
Project duration: 6 weeks
Team: Industrial designer, Mechanical engineer
During this project phase, we undertook the development of high-fidelity design explorations for three CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) device concepts. In addition, we crafted a digital user experience (UX) flow capable of accommodating various physical interactions and gestures. The CGM system provides real-time blood glucose monitoring through a body-attached patch connected to a glucose monitor.
Abbott has since advanced these concepts for user testing and is currently engaged in the collection of user feedback to decide the final direction.
The CGM device stands as an indispensable companion for individuals managing diabetes, an essential item to carry daily. Its accessibility for quick and convenient glucose level checks is paramount. With a specific focus on the elderly population, our design accommodated a minimum acceptable text and screen size, establishing clear design principle.
Our exploration encompassed a variety of form factors, emphasizing ease of carry, wearability, and user-friendly readability. As this phase concluded, we refined our focus to three key design directions: tile, remote, and fidget.
CONCEPT 1_TILE
TILE is a beautifully designed reader that is portable, ergonomic, and inclusive. The display is square-shaped, which supports ambidexterity, enabling access to the corner wheel from both directions. It includes a spacious front touch screen, with a display size comparable to Abbott's current glucose reader. This allows it to comfortably display all the needed information and offer smooth menu interactions through the touch screen.
The Corner Wheel is an intuitive way to navigate. It can scroll and click, providing tangible feedback and a sense of tactility to the user.
We've increased the corner radius, and the wheel is also exposed on the backside, making it user-friendly by providing a clear affordance for your finger to interact with. You can engage with the wheel from various angles, whether it's the edge, or even the backside of the wheel. This offers an additional and user-friendly navigation method in addition to the touchscreen.
It has transformed into a wearable, thanks to a distinctive corner detail that permits the attachment and removal of a key ring and clip, making it suitable for wearing. You can effortlessly attach the clip to your pocket for quick access, or you can use string accessories to secure it in your bag. This ensures that you won't have to search for it when you need to check your numbers urgently.
CONCEPT 2_REMOTE
The remote design concept is familiar and user-friendly, offering flexible interface options and making it easier to hold and interact with.
The display is formed in a rectangular shape, which is the most efficient and familiar form for presenting the user interface (UI). The display size is fairly large, allowing for easy reading and interaction with all the information
The device has an ergonomic form factor with an all-around rounded shape. This design makes it easy to hold and provides a comfortable feeling when held in your hand. The keypad design is simple, intuitive, and inclusive. The presence of little dots and a subtly scooped dish provides guidance on where to press. Each button does not have a specific character, making it universal in both landscape and portrait orientations, as well as for left and right-handed individuals. The device features a small hook that allows for easy carrying of the reader, accommodating various uses and needs.
While it keeps things familiar for users, it's also quite flexible when it comes to orientation. What's particularly appealing about this design is its ability to work seamlessly in different positions. It can be used in landscape, portrait, left, and right orientations, accommodating different user preferences and needs. Specially landscape mode, provides a comfortable experience similar to playing a game with a joystick. It also offers increased visibility, allowing for easier reading of trends on a larger portion of the screen.
Fidget is a pocketable and incredibly tactile reader that prioritizes necessary information. The device has a slim and clean design, making it highly portable and easy to hold in your hand, similar to a pen. It features a fidgetable button, adding an element of playfulness to the design. The knob has a nice texture that enhances the overall tactile experience. It is easy to grip and twist, providing a satisfying interaction. The click button is made of a soft material, offering a pleasant and soft touch sensation.
Despite its small size, the device offers a landscape mode that allows you to view numbers and images in a larger scale than expected. This feature enhances the overall visibility and user experience, making the most out of the available screen space. It transforms into wearable. The wearable device provides the convenience of attaching and detaching the clip and keyhook as needed. The USB-C port is conveniently accessible, allowing for easy connection with accessories. You do not need to detach your accessories if you prefer to keep them connected permanently, ensuring a hassle-free user experience.
